El Rosario, Chimaltenango

In Guatemala Próspera we work to achieve a cultural transformation under moral intelligence. For this reason, in 2015, the strategy for the community development of Aldea El Rosario, located on the edge of the road to San Martín Jilotepeque, in Chimaltenango, was designed.

Our community development program experts conducted a community situation analysis; Through it, the problems that afflicted it were determined, based on this we began to work on the development of a human scale and we have obtained the following results:

Health and nutrition

  1. In 2015 the community had 1,900 inhabitants, 250 of whom are children, 162 suffered from chronic malnutrition and 6 with acute malnutrition. Thanks to the work of Guatemala Próspera and the Ministry of Public Health and Social Assistance, today no child suffers from acute malnutrition and the number of those with chronic malnutrition decreased to 62.

  2. To date, in partnership with Habitat, 81% of the cost of 26 ecological stoves has been donated to help reduce indicators of respiratory diseases, families have paid the remaining 19%.

  3. Thanks to the hygiene program implemented, changes in the culture of the community are reported, having made more than 900 educational visits.

  4. The facilities of a house were adapted to be used as a clinic in collaboration with the community and the Ministry of Public Health, and the Mariano Gálvez University was able to send medical students to do their EPS at said clinic. Currently, an average of 2,500 patients are treated per year.

Education

  1. To date, more than 63,000 school snacks have been served in collaboration with the mothers of the community and the Ministry of Education.

  2. Each classroom has an Ecofilter to prevent diseases and promote a culture of hygiene.

  3. In 2017, 29 adolescents received a scholarship, of which 80% successfully completed their studies.

  4. A classroom was built and the lighting conditions of the room were improved.

Productivity

  1. Several groups of women have graduated from sewing programs which has had a direct impact on the household economy. In addition to this, three neighboring communities are also benefiting from them as some of their inhabitants are learning and marketing the products they make in the program.

  • Family gardens have directly benefited families by providing them not only with a healthy diet but also with a means to earn additional income.

  • Seed capital and training were provided to start a lumbri compost program that will be partly used in family gardens and the rest sold, which will improve their economy.

  • In the community garden, our partner hired staff from the community, which has brought an economic benefit to the families since they now have a stable job.

  • We have four production modules and we are currently testing the cultivation of 8 different types of vegetables for marketing.

  • A literacy program launched as a requirement for women benefiting from a family garden has provided excellent results in the community.

Saving

  • A savings program was started which has transformed the culture. Currently, 204 families are part of it and among the benefits observed we can mention a group of women who paid for their training and investment capital for a new meat business.

At Guatemala Próspera we are happy to see the development of the El Rosario community, we will continue working on various projects with the collaboration of strategic allies, through which we can provide its population with the tools for long-term self-sustainable development.

In 2018 we will start working in a nearby community, we have already made a study of the situation in it and we will start with projects focused on the development of a human scale, starting with the round tables of principles and values that will generate a change in the awareness of their habitants.
